Rollins Students, Faculty Take Part in International Coastal Cleanup Day
September 17, 2007

This past Saturday, in partnership with Keep Brevard Beautiful, more than 200 Rollins students, faculty and staff participated in International Coastal Cleanup Day. Rollins volunteers, along with others from the Central Florida area, collected marine debris at the Canaveral National Seashore at Playalinda Beach. This is the second year Rollins has participated and the College plans to continue this event as an annual service learning activity.
The International Coastal Cleanup is the largest and most successful volunteer event of its kind. Each year, thousands of volunteers from around the world participate, clearing trash off the coastlines, rivers and lakes. Volunteers record every piece of trash collected and the Ocean Conservancy compiles and analyzes the data to learn more about the behaviors that cause the debris.
To date, more than 6 million volunteers have removed over 100 million pounds of marine litter from a total of 170,000 miles of beaches and inland waterways. For more information, visit www.oceanconservancy.org.
