Rollins’ Greek community has been very busy his year working on a variety of community involvement and philanthropic activities.
• On the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 7, Rollins fraternity and sorority community engaged in Can-struction, a philanthropic event to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Approximately 200 students collected a total of 2,937 non-perishable items for this night of Greek Week 2007, which is a series of events designed to build community and celebrate friendships.
The activity on Mills Lawn involved a competition to erect a structure which was judged on creativity, height, structural ingenuity, relation to theme and use of labels. In collaboration with Dining Services, all fraternities and sororities will continue to collect cans and other non-perishable items until Friday, Nov. 16, all of which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Thanks to Dining Services, the group that collects the greatest weight of food will be given $1,000 to spend on catering services.
• Chi Psi and Tau Kappa Epsilon teamed up to put on the “The Rolly Colly Volley for Charity,” which had an excellent showing of 16 five-member teams and raised $1,085 that will go toward the Dance Marathon – Rollins’ largest charity event of the year, benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network.
• The fraternity Alpha Tau Omega participates in “ATO Day” each week at the Winter Park Community Center. ATO brothers spend every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the company of underprivileged children in the area tutoring and assisting with schoolwork and involving the children in recreational activities such as kickball and basketball.
• On October 19, Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Psi, Phi Delta Theta, X-Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Chi Omega hosted “Dropping Gloves for Cancer,” a hockey event that raised more than $5,500. The proceeds were donated to a 3-year-old girl from Atlanta, who is suffering from a rare form of cancer. She has recently undergone a liver transplant, and this was an effort to help her family with the financial burden.
• On October 20, Phi Delta Theta hosted the annual Rho Cheadle Memorial Golf Tournament at Stoneybrook East Golf Club. Money raised from the event was donated to an organization dealing with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
