CFAMilies Program Brings Family Fun to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum

April 11, 2008

CFAMilies, the Cornell Fine Arts Museum's newest program, offers families the opportunity to partake in creative art projects together. In effort to increase the museum's visibility and awareness, CFAM decided to reach out to local families with children. "CFAMilies emerged out of discussions with local Girl Scout and Boy Scout organizations about visiting the museum to work on their art badges," said CFAM Education Coordinator Tracy Gore. These conversations lead to further discussions and the beginnings of CFAMilies Sundays.

The program is held on the first Sunday of each month and lasts from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Each experience begins with a guided tour of the CFAM galleries and is followed by an art project that allows families to create miniature sculptures, collages and contemporary art. Each of the art projects are inspired by the current exhibitions and are designed for family interaction. Studio Art majors Elizabeth Hollabaugh and Andrew Cohen work with Gore on project ideas and event preparation.

According to Gore, "the museum experience is always enhanced, and curiosity and learning increased, when children and parents make their own discoveries and then share them as a family." So if you're looking for something fun to do on the first Sunday of the month, come experience CFAMilies at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. "Great conversations about art, the gallery experience and creative project make a wonderful Sunday afternoon activity," Gore said.
