More than 2,000 canned goods collected during annual "CANstruction" event
Hamilton Holt students donated more than 2,000 canned goods to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida in association with its annual "CANstruction" event, held at Rollins on November 19.
Sponsored by the Hamilton Holt Student Government Association (HHSGA), three teams participated in "CANstruction" by designing and building sculptures made entirely of canned or boxed food items that were donated by Rollins faculty, staff and students and by local grocers.
The winner of the competition was "O Cannenbaum," a Christmas tree built by the Holt staff team directed by Academic Advisor Terrie Cole.
The faculty team, headed by Assistant Professor of Communication Sue Easton, built a six-foot-tall tomato soup can with 975 tomato cans. HHSGA built a green and white wedding cake out of pasta boxes.
"This is the first year Rollins has participated in the national design competition to benefit charity," said Richard Mino, president of the HHSGA. "More than 40 cities across the U.S. are participating in 'CANstruction' this year."
Richard has challenged more members of the Rollins community to participate next year. "We met with campus organizations recently and got commitments from everyone for next year's event—including the Greek community," he said.
