Bottom Rung on the top!
December 12, 2008
Life at Rollins has been such a great experience that I was surprised to suddenly realize that we were almost done with our first semester. It just feels like a few weeks have passed since I came to the United States and here I am now, already registered for my classes for the coming spring term. As of writing this article I have one more week to go before the finals followed by the winter holidays, when I will be celebrating my first Christmas in America; suffice to say life in America has been one of many “firsts” for me. It has been a period of quite a few “firsts” for Americans in general as well; the most obvious one being the election of our first African American President, Barack Obama. I feel so fortunate to have witnessed such a historical event in American history. Besides, I also had a great semester in college and from having fun conducting experiments in the physics lab to going to Homeless Shelters to help the poor, the past few months have truly been an educational and enriching experience.
One of the greatest achievements this semester for me was winning the RCC cup. The “Bottom Rung” that I talked about in a previous article eventually managed to win the RCC cup. We won the cup on the Olympics Day that Rollins Explorations organized before the award ceremony. It was a great feat since we managed to accumulate more than 800 points, which is the highest total ever in the history of this competition at Rollins. The winning RCC was rewarded with t-shirts with RCC champions printed on it, $275 to spend, the coveted RCC cup and off course bragging rights amongst their friends!!
Ian,Peter,Hunter and Dr. Boniface, our five legged racing team.
We were so pumped up even before the Olympics that we were the only team to show up with our unique “Bottom Rung” T-shirts on, with a ladder painted on it and our names on the top. We made special t-shirts for Professor Boniface and Dean Joyner. We also gave a similar t-shirt to Douglas Little from Rollins Explorations for organizing this competition. Dean Joyner was very passionate about winning the RCC cup ever since the start of this semester however; it was very unfortunate to not have her present when we were crowned the champions since she had some important work in Boston. On a more positive note, Professor Boniface showed his athleticism and dedication to the cause by hula hooping to get us a few extra points! He was also one of the four people in the five-legged race, which was by far the most entertaining event to watch in the competition. We also had games like crab walking, running, wheel barrowing and many more events in the Olympics.

Even before the Olympics we have been having several activities on Fridays, dubbed the Fox Friday events. From the Alma Matter competition, the Battle of the Brains, the Volleyball tournament to Dodge ball tournaments, Fridays have always been a day to look forward to. Rollins Explorations conducts these activities for the freshmen batch of students, which is for all the RCC’s, and it is a great learning and bonding experience. Now as this semester comes to an end, I cannot wait for the next semester to start since the classes I signed up for seem really interesting. Before that however, I intend to visit my relatives and experience my first American Christmas!
