My Warm Winter

February 03, 2009

The last week of my fall semester was probably the busiest of my life. In spite of all the pressure and stress from the impending finals however, I managed to enjoy my Thanksgiving break with Brian and his family. I also went to Magic Kingdom on Saturday before the final week of the semester, and had a great time during the winter break with my cousin Anil and my uncle Sudhir and his family. I also attended my cousin's graduation!

This was my first “American” Thanksgiving as well as Christmas. At first I was skeptical as to whether I would find anything fun to do for a whole month of winter, but in retrospect I am really glad that I decided to stay back. The first reason is that it was not holiday season in Nepal (my home country), with the second reason being I got a chance to spend so much time with relatives and the best part was it was never cold!! Weather preferences may certainly be relative according to people but for me personally, the weather was just perfect.

I was amazed to see how people made excuses just so they could spend all day cooking and then eating to their heart’s content during dinner. My first Thanksgiving experience with Brian and his family was most interesting, and I am so grateful to have been invited over to their place. I stayed with Mario and his family (Sudhir Uncle’s friend) for Christmas.

Amongst the various great things that Florida has to offer, Disney World is definitely something not to be missed. My visit was all the more special since I had never been to any of the parks before. And what better time to visit Disney Land than the Saturday before the finals?

The day was an absolute blast with my friends Emma, Ashley and Marie Claire. I also went to three of the theme parks as well as the water park, “Blizzard Beach” during the winter break. I liked the Animal Kingdom and its Everest Expedition best, not only because it reminded me of Nepal but because of the interesting details and the novel concept of the ride. I was stunned to see how they had such intricate details, from the hilltop water tanks, stray electric wires from the huts, momo (spicy dumplings) cooking dishes, pagoda temples, to the kerosene stoves; the overall attention to detail was quite astounding.

I went to Blizzard Beach the day after Christmas. I have a few friends studying in the North East and while they were being snowed in with real blizzards I was in my swimwear enjoying the beautiful weather at Blizzard Beach (it was 80 degrees that day). When I called them and explained how much I loved Florida, my jealous friends even hung up on me! Sudhir Uncle, who lives in Virginia, drove down to Florida to visit Disney World with his wife and three angelic daughters. It had been years that I hadn’t seen him so going to Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and spending Christmas with them was possibly the best way I could have spent by break.

I say this all the time but I guess it won’t hurt to tell the truth. I am so very happy to be at Rollins, and the fact that we are located in Florida, the Sunshine State, makes it even better.
