This has been one of the busiest and most eventful weeks at Rollins. The excitement and energy on campus was palpable for the Homecoming Week and the Alumni Weekend. Organized by the Student Government Association (SGA), Homecoming week is one of the most interesting weeks of the spring semester. With everybody eagerly anticipating Fox Day and the beautiful spring weather, this time of the year is when the college feels the sweetest. Throughout this week Rollins had so many events going on that I could not fit it all in my small calendar.
The SGA organized a five day back to back event themed “PAINT!” from Monday the 23rd right until Friday 27th. “We like it Dirty” was the theme and we were warned that it would be dirty and so it was. The week started off with “Color Wars” on Monday. For this event, we gathered together and teamed up with our class years and had a paint balloon war in Mills Lawn. After having so many classes and piles of work these activities were a perfect way for students to relax, enjoy and bond all at the same time. After everyone was soaked in water color the next day was the “Mai- Tai Dye” day. We dyed a homecoming shirt in the “Mai- Tai Dye” while sipping some fruity drinks and munching on some delicious food. This was a lot of fun because different students dyed their shirts to anything they wanted and everybody enjoyed it. We left the shirts to dry through the night.
So, after throwing water color balloons, getting soaked all afternoon in Mills Lawn on Monday and having a great time dyeing colorful and creative shirts the next day, Wednesday was the “PAINT! Party”. This was probably the most fun activity amongst the color activities that we had this week. The party started late at around 9 pm; behind the lawn between Elizabeth and Ward Hall. I had the most fun in this activity since it took place in the dark and the glow and paint going together with some great music doubled the fun. As the SGA stated in their party invitation we entered in one color and came out in a completely different one. This was like a dance party but instead of the dance we went all out with Dayglo paint. We had a DJ and some excellent food at this event that helped make the night very special.
The Winners - Sisters of Kappa performing in Lip-Sync
After three paint events, we had the lip-syncing competition on Thursday where the Greek organizations on campus as well as the Non Greek groups danced off hoping to be crowned the next Lip-sync champions. Kappa Kappa Gamma got won the Greek division although the other dance groups were equally impressive. They got cash prizes sponsored by Alumni relations and they have a chance to perform at the Orlando Magic’s Game at Amway Arena sponsored by ACE. After a week of getting dirty, we served the community by helping clean up on Friday!
After this eventful week, we celebrated the Alumni Weekend. I am currently pledging for X Club and it was great to spend some time and share experiences with our alumni. X Club is the oldest fraternity on campus, established since 1928, so we had a lot of alumni from the sixties and even from fifties show up which was great. All in all this homecoming was a great one and I look forward to having such weeks in the future.
