It's Fox Day !!!
April 23, 2009
“Fox Day” is one of the great traditions at Rollins celebrated annually. During spring time, when classes are heating up and the semester is in it’s business end, the President of the College himself puts the statue of the fox in the center of Mills Lawn thereby declaring that it’s “FOX DAY!” It is a day when all the classes, homework, assignments, conferences and meetings are cancelled and most of the students go to the beach and have a wonderful time. The most exciting thing about Fox Day is that it’s a total surprise and not even the faculty or staff knows about it. The only person who knows about it and who decides it is the President of Rollins. It is a tradition to go to the beach and enjoy the warm Florida sun, and just take a day off from all the anxieties and pressures of work.
Me with Mr. Fox- I ran to Mills lawn as soon as I found out it was Fox day.
This year, President Duncan walked up to mills lawn and set up the Fox very early in the morning of April the 7th. The day starts with President Duncan inviting any member of the campus to his office for a doughnut. He wishes everybody a happy fox day and every student is handed a proclamation that has the signature of President Duncan and the fox himself. Generally, almost all the students go to the beach but unfortunately the weather was slightly chilly that day so quite a few decided to go elsewhere. However, there were quite a large number of brave people on the beach anyways. It is just spectacular to see more than a thousand people on the beach. What makes it special is that it is not just a crowded beach but it is crowded with your friends or people you know. This is another great reason why I love Rollins; it is a small college and it is very easy to stay in touch with almost everyone on campus.
Me and my friends at Universal Studios.
The Student Government Association (SGA) organized transportation and a trip to Universal Studios and Cocoa beach this year. Since it was very chilly, I decided to go to Universal Studios instead of the beach. I had a very wonderful experience and a great day, and from what I heard from my friends the beach was great fun too. I was working on a lab report until 3 am the previous night and only after 3 hours of sleep, at 6 am, I heard people running across the hallways shouting, “It’s Fox Day”. However, the lack of sleep or the cold weather, that day, did not deter me or any other student from having a great Fox Day.
Some of my friends enjoying the beach.
After having fun all day, we all gathered at Mills lawn in the evening for a huge feast. The feast is a great way to relax after a very eventful and tiring day of having fun! Fox day has been a great tradition at Rollins but it is true that it creates slight problems in scheduling classes since it is totally unexpected. All in all, it is important for students to respect this tradition and act dutifully and in a mature fashion towards the entire organization of this program. I loved every minute of this year’s Fox Day and I am already looking forward to the one next year!
