Every day should be Fox Day!

April 20, 2009

At 6:34 in the morning on April 7, I was awakened by a text message from a close friend. Groggily turning over, I opened my phone to find the words, “HAPPY FOX DAY!” lighting up the screen. It was the day that we had been waiting for all year. Giddily, I sprang on my roommate’s bed and began jumping up and down, yelling “It’s Fox Day! It’s Fox Day!”

Fifteen minutes later, we were skipping towards Mills Lawn, ready to greet the infamous Fox who was responsible for the highlight of our spring semester. A few pictures with the Fox later, we enjoyed a complimentary Fox Day breakfast in the Cornell Campus Center and then headed back to our dorms to pack for the beach. My friends and I all filed excitedly onto one of the buses, which was provided by the Office of the President and the Student Government Association, and were soon on our way to Cocoa Beach.

During the 45-minute drive to the beach, we all sat eagerly on the edge of our seats, anticipating the day to come. It was only 10:00 in the morning, but we had already been up for nearly four hours and had many more to go before the day’s festivities would end. By the time we arrived at the shoreline, we were more than elated to feel the warm sand and cool water between our toes.

Nearly the whole school was packed on a quarter of a mile-long strip of the beach. Although it was only my second Fox Day, I felt like a veteran as I watched all of my classmates milling about the beach. Some tossed Frisbees, while others built sand domes, and a brave few actually ventured into the waters, despite the chilly weather and frequent breeze. My girls and I spent our four hours on the beach mingling with some of our favorite guy friends, enjoying a delicious picnic in the sun, and running up to random acquaintances yelling, “Happy Fox Day!”

Hours later, we returned to Mills Lawn hours, exhausted from our long day in the sun. There, we were greeted with a bountiful feast of barbecued chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, macaroni and cheese, and cookies, which was provided by the Office of the President. It was a beautiful sight to see most of the Rollins community gathered together, enjoying a meal with the Fox. Tired students lay sprawled out on the grass as staff and faculty chatted cheerfully at the round tables. It was the perfect culmination for a wonderful Fox Day. Now, only one question remains: When will the Fox show his face next year?

More about Brittany...

Growing up in Central Florida, Brittany had always imagined attending a college where the snow flowed heavily. However, all thoughts of donning her heavy winter coat dissipated when she laid eyes on Rollins. A picturesque private school only a few hours from her hometown, Rollins swept her off her feet.

Now a sophomore, Brittany devotes the majority of her time to The Sandspur, where she works as the Life & Times editor, and to R-TV, where she serves as the director of public relations. Brittany said, “Over the past year, Rollins has become a second home to me. It has provided me with an atmosphere in which I can live and thrive.”
