Cheering On the Magic Men
April 22, 2009
Rollins’ location in beautiful Winter Park, Florida has many advantages. Being a small town, Winter Park has community events such as the Saturday farmer’s market and the annual sidewalk festival that Rollins students often take part in. This small town, however, is less than five miles from the downtown of a major city. Any night during the weekend you can find any number of Rollins students bouncing to their favorite beats at the local night clubs. Orlando also has a major sports franchise, the National Basketball Association’s Orlando Magic. After about a decade of mediocrity, the Magic have put together a team with the fourth best winning percentage in the league.
About a month ago, some friends of mine gave me a call and asked if I wanted to go watch the Magic play the Boston Celtics. I hadn’t been to a Magic game in almost a year and so I was excited to see them take on the defending champion Celtics. My girlfriend, and fellow R-Journalist, Brittany Fornof had never been to a Magic game and were excited for all the action.
The game was sold out and so we had to pay $18 for tickets that would normally cost only $10, but the show was more than worth the price of admission. The arena was packed with both Orlando and Boston fans and, although the Magic led for most of the game, it came down to the final two minutes. The Magic were up by 3 points when Paul Pierce of the Celtics nails a jumper to pull within one point. As Pierce misses a 3-point shot at the buzzer, the stadium went crazy.
Pumped about the Magic’s win and excited to see another game, we gladly signed up to see the Magic play the Toronto Raptors the next week. All Campus Events (ACE) sponsored buses to the game. The winners of the Homecoming Week Lip Sync competition were performing their dances at the opening of the game. The crowd favorite of the night was the half time show performed by the retiree dance troop the Silver Stars. Although it was another close game, the Magic lost to the Raptors by four.
Even with this loss and four others in the month of April, the Magic entered the playoffs as the second seed in the East. A few days ago, my father called to tell me that a friend of his had sky box tickets to the first game of the playoffs. My little sister and I arrived early and found the elevator up to our box. As first timers, we were so excited to see our reserved seats. Although we were higher up than the nose-bleed seats of the Celtics game, the delicious food and the complimentary blue and white M&Ms made it a very enjoyable viewing experience. Unfortunately, the Magic men once again let us down and lost in a heart-breaker in the final few minutes.
Even though the Magic lost two out of the three games I’ve seen, I’m still excited to see their progress this season and see how far they can go into the playoffs.
