LEAD Team
May 20, 2008
There are over 100 student organizations on campus ranging from fraternities and sororities to cultural awareness associations to service clubs. Most of these groups put on programs either to get their message out to the campus or to build up their organization. It is the job of the LEAD Team to fund these student-led programs.
I was originally approached at the beginning of my sophomore year to join the LEAD Team, but turned it down because I was concerned about my other time commitments. Next year I will no longer be an RA and so I decided this would be a perfect way to stay involved on campus. Even though the 10 new team members don’t begin working until the beginning of next year, we have been shadowing the current team members and learning the ropes.
Student organization presidents recently chose new LEAD Team representatives for the next school year and I am very excited about the organizations I was assigned. One of the most prominent organizations that I will be advising is Eco-Rollins. Eco-Rollins is a club devoted to promoting environmental awareness and responsibility on campus. Over the past three years they have been largely responsible for environmentally friendly changes in the Cornell Campus Center, the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Bush Science Center, and for an annual Earth Day celebration. I am eager to help them put on more campus-wide programs to help educate students about what they can do to help the environment.
Another fantastic organization I will be working with is the Forum. Three years ago, Fay Pappas, a freshman at the time, wanted a place where students and faculty could discuss some of the world’s pressing issues with each other as well as local leaders and experts in the field. The Forum’s topics have varied from immigration to racism to homelessness. These meeting are great opportunities to help the student body grow academically outside of classes.
In addition to our duties advising student organizations, all LEAD Team members have a personal initiative. This is a project that we personally feel passionate about and work to bring about on campus. Past initiatives have included Join Us in Making Progress (JUMP), an organization dedicated to helping the homeless of the area, Rollins Relief, an organization dedicated to helping disaster victims, and Campus Movie Fest, a student movie-making contest, coming to Rollins.
One of the few things that I do not like about Rollins is that beyond Fox Day we have very few traditions. Over the past year I have talked to some Rollins alumni and have heard about a past tradition of a Fiesta Day Parade in the fall. As part of my project, I want to resurrect this tradition. I also want to find a way to honor a man I believe to be the greatest Rollins graduate of all time, Fred Rogers. I am extremely excited about the possibilities we have for this coming year and I can’t wait to take up my new post as a LEAD Teamer.
| More about Daniel... Daniel has been involved with a wide range of activities over his first three years at Rollins. He has worked for Residential Life, the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, the Dean of the Faculty, the Admissions Department and the Office of Public Relations & Communications.
Daniel has also taken advantage of the many opportunities for co-curricular education. He traveled to New Orleans with Rollins Relief and to Australia for a semester abroad. Daniel describes involvement at Rollins by saying, “Rollins has so many amazing opportunities for personal growth. I hope that my entries will help new students find everything they’re looking for.”
