Back in the Swing
September 25, 2008
The interesting thing about my summer job is that it didn’t end with the end of the summer. Working for the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (OSIL), I was tasked with creating campus-wide programming for the first few weeks of school. I worked with a number of offices such as Explorations, Residential Life, and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) to put on a wide variety of events. They ranged from movies on our central green, Mills Lawn, to a beach party at a local park, Dinky Dock. I had a lot of fun putting on the events and we had some great turnouts. One of my favorites was a trip I helped coordinate with the Rollins Outdoor Club (ROC). A group of thirty students went to Wekiva Springs State Park and then returned to campus for a barbecue.
Following the events I helped arrange, many other student organizations have put on some fantastic programs. All Campus Events (ACE), for example, sponsored a Rollins version of the Olympics, complete with a balloon toss and speed walking. I am proud to report that I brought home the gold in both the dizzy bat and the crab-walk/wheel barrow relay. ACE also recently put on a dive-in movie where an inflatable movie screen is put next to the pool and students can swim and watch at the same time. Eco-Rollins, a group of students concerned about the environment and working to implement sustainable solutions, sponsored a very successful ping pong tournament in the campus center to raise awareness about the new recycling guidelines and for their many other upcoming educational programs. | |
Another group that has been very active in the past few weeks is Dance Marathon. The actual Dance Marathon is in November and is an event where students sign up to dance for 12 hours to raise awareness and money for Children’s Miracle Network. This past week, Dance Marathon sponsored a spirit week, similar to the spirit week that precedes most homecomings. Each day is themed and has special events to get people excited for dance marathon, to sign up dancers, and to raise money. “Super” Tuesday this week had nothing to do with presidential primaries and everything to do with a giant inflatable superhero challenge course. “Wacky Tacky” Wednesday was a wacky dance party in the campus center. “Pirates vs. Ninjas” Thursday saw the debate team battle against each other to decide who would win in a fight. The Rollins Improve Players (RIP) then came out and fought the battle through a different medium, improvised comedy. Ninjas won the debate, but the pirate team won the improve show.
I guess the world will never know until Dance Marathon puts on a tie-breaker. Friday was one of the best days, though, because Dance Marathon set up a barbecue on Mills Lawn so that students could meet the children and families that are being helped by their donations. Many students came out to meet the Miracle Families, as they’re called, and to help the children make some art work that would later be displayed in the Little Life Art Show in the Campus Center.
One of my favorite aspects of this year so far is having the time and the availability to attend so many great events. I really enjoy being able to recognize and support all of the student leaders who work so hard to make this such a dynamic campus.
| More about Daniel... Daniel has been involved with a wide range of activities over his first three years at Rollins. He has worked for Residential Life, the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, the Dean of the Faculty, the Admissions Department and the Office of Public Relations & Communications.
Daniel has also taken advantage of the many opportunities for co-curricular education. He traveled to New Orleans with Rollins Relief and to Australia for a semester abroad. Daniel describes involvement at Rollins by saying, “Rollins has so many amazing opportunities for personal growth. I hope that my entries will help new students find everything they’re looking for.”
