Classy Ladies

March 03, 2009

Although I never joined a Greek organization, approximately one third of the Rollins campus has. I, like most people, have friends in every fraternity and sorority, which offers a wide variety of social events. A number of the fraternities host large, campus-wide events. Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE), for example, hosts an annual toga party. Their toga party, along with my own recent trip to Greece, was an impetus of my own Hellenic soirée for my twenty-first birthday. Some events are off campus, such as the graffiti party held by Alpha Tau Omega (ATO). A large plurality of campus dresses in white t-shirts and, armed with sharpies of every shape and hue, cover each other with multi-colored messages of love, sometimes even getting them on the t-shirts.
From Sororities

This weekend, I was invited to two sorority events. This Friday, Kappa Delta (KD) held their spring crush party. Each sister invites three “crushes” to the event, and my good friend Marissa invited me this year. The girls spent the early part of the evening doing their hair and make up in preparation for the night. We all met up at the KD house then walked to Mills Lawn to board four large chartered buses. The girls were so excited for the night that they couldn’t wait until we got to the night club, they had a spontaneous dance party in the aisle. The top floor of the club was reserved for the KD ladies and everyone had a great time mingling and dancing the night away.
From Sororities

The next night, I was privileged to be invited to the house of Non Compis Mentis (NCM), a local sorority established in 1970. As a senior, I’ve been around the campus more than a couple of times. I’ve calculated that I have three more buildings to enter on campus, at which point I will have been everywhere. The NCM house, Mayflower Hall, was one of them. The ladies of NCM were having their traditional wine tasting. As I have only recently turned twenty-one, I am still excited by any opportunity to pull out my license. After we had passed Campus Security and I had gotten my wrist band, I met up with my friend Louisa. After sampling some recommended wines, we took a tour of the building, all the while Louisa providing stories about the history of the sorority as well as personal stories about her and her sorority sisters. It was a very elegant event. With soft music playing in the background, platters of cheese and crackers strategically placed around the room, and well-dressed students engaged in droll conversation, I felt sophisticated and mature.
From Sororities

Sorority and fraternity life offers opportunities for socialization not just within or among Greek organizations, but also between Greeks and non-Greeks.
