Like It's Going Out Of Style

April 05, 2009

As the months left for me here at Rollins quickly melt into just weeks, I’m filled with both nostalgia and trepidation. For most of my time here, I’ve managed to maintain a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. As the possibility of never seeing these people again looms large, I try to find times with each friend individually as well as in a group. My friends and I have begun throwing themed parties in my apartment to bring us all together.

For my latest birthday, dozens of friends descended upon my Sutton apartment for a classic toga party. My recent trip to the Hellenic peninsula made this even more appropriate. Before spring break, my whole apartment put on our own version of the prom. My friends Erin and Liane moved all the living room furniture to make a dance floor and decorated for the theme “Love in the Jungle.” Well-dressed guests arrived to find a leopard-print photo area, green crepe paper vines, and a jungle cake. Liane’s boyfriend Alain provided the music and we all to Nelly, T.I., the Backstreet Boys, the Macarena, and the Cupid Shuffle. At the end of the night, Luke and Jenna, each of whom hadn’t attended their respective high school proms, were named king and queen.

Our next party is 007 themed. The men will dress in their finest suits and tuxes for a game of poker while the ladies undoubtedly take all their chips while wearing beautiful cocktail dresses. The next week, we have a photo scavenger hunt scheduled. This will be our fourth such quasi-annual event. Every year we don our cameras and set out to take a picture on a roof, acting out our favorite Disney scene, or with a stranger’s dog.

The trepidation comes in response to what comes after the parties are over. In such an uncertain job market, any college graduate would be concerned about the possibility of finding employment. Luckily, Rollins College gives many opportunities to network. Much of business, after all, is about who you know. Recently, the Office of Career Services put on a Career Expo where more than 50 companies came to meet with Rollins finest future graduates. Beyond this, Career Services has something called the Resume Book where students can post their resumes online for potential employers. I have already been offered a job through Career Services, so I’m confident about my post-graduate prospects.
