Back in the Routine

September 21, 2008

With four weeks of class behind us, it’s safe to say that school has started. I am so glad to finally be back into a routine. The first week is always crazy with trying to figure out your schedule, standing in long lines at 7 a.m. at Student Records, and running all over campus to catch your professors and adviser in between classes to sign your add/drop form. I can finally breathe when that week is over. Once I get my class schedule squared away then I tackle the work schedule.

Monday thru Friday I work as a work-study in the Office of the Dean of Faculty and I absolutely love it! It is one of what I call my “homes” on campus. On Saturdays I tutor high school students at Upward Bound at Rollins. After my class and work schedule is all set I can then add in meetings, events, and lunches with my friends, and before you know it my schedule is packed – just the way I like it!

Now that school has started my job at Upward Bound has begun. Upward Bound is a year round program for local high school students who desire additional academic preparation and encouragement to succeed in high school and college. It is a federally funded TRIO program in which eligible students must be from low socioeconomic backgrounds (defined by federal guidelines) or the first generation in their household to attend a four-year college. I look forward to spending time and helping my students each week. I generally tutor Science, Math, and Spanish, but I am always there to assist them with anything. They love it when I give them insight to college life and what it’s all about, especially from my perspective of attending school so far away from home. Last week in our Chemistry class we performed an experiment to improve their skills of precise measurements and data analysis. The kids had a great time testing the suds size of different dish soaps and using their knowledge of measuring and analyzing the data received.

Unfortunately this year my birthday fell on the second day of school (such a bummer), but my amazing friends still made it awesome. I went to Mellow Mushroom for lunch, one of my favorite pizza restaurants, and then to Wazzabi Sushi for dinner, an amazing sushi restaurant close to the Winter Park Village. After lots of pizza, sushi, and cake (five cakes over the course of the week to be exact) I was no longer upset my birthday fell during the first week of classes! I had a wonderful time with all of my friends and I am so fortunate to have each and every one of them in my life! It makes me sad to think that my time left at Rollins and with them is limited at this point, but I am glad to say that I have enjoyed every minute here at Rollins and have no regrets. I plan to make the best of my last year of undergrad; they say these are the greatest years of our lives!

More about Jenn...

As she begins her fifth and final year at Rollins, Jenn is clearly not a new student to the Rollins community. After studying abroad in Spain and having two very different concentrations, Spanish and Pre-dental, she is spending her last year finishing up her dental school prerequisites and completing her Spanish major. Staying at Rollins for another year has allowed her to continue being involved on campus as well.

Jenn is the director of All Campus Events (ACE), the president of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), and a member of the Academic Honor Council, NSCS, and Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society. She also enjoys teaching oral health care lessons to elementary students. “I think that my diverse involvement on campus and experiences will allow me to relate to many Rollins students and offer valuable insight to college life,” Jenn said.
