Goodbye Crazy Summer

September 18, 2008

After a long week of final exams and moving into my new apartment off campus, I packed my suitcases and anxiously flew back home to southeastern Wisconsin. I was excited to see my friends and family that I had not seen since Christmas break, but was dreading the summer full of studying for the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).

I spent the first month and a half slaving over my dental school applications and preparing myself for the big test day, meanwhile working a couple days a week at a department store back at home. After writing, editing, and re-writing my personal statement several times I finally was satisfied with my final draft. I completed the other sections of the application, narrowed down the schools I wanted to apply to, and eventually submitted the application. I was so nervous to finally click the submit button to realize that you are immediately requested to pay for the application; that was an exciting surprise.

Once I had submitted my application I was able to really buckle down and focus on studying for the DAT. I spent everyday reviewing notes, completing online workshops, and taking practice tests. Before I knew it, the day was here. I woke up that morning never being so nervous in my life. I drove to the testing center, was checked in, and allowed to begin early. I looked at the computer screen and said to myself, “here goes … I can do this.”

After four and a half hours of testing I finally completed the exam and felt the huge weight being lifted from my shoulders. That afternoon I packed my suitcase and flew down to Rollins for my mock-interview with the Pre-Health Committee. Upon completing the interview the committee was able to write my letter of recommendation and submit it, making my application complete. I was so relieved. Now it is time to submit my secondary applications and anxiously wait to hear from the schools that I applied to.

Once the studying and application process was complete, the fun was able to begin. Now that I had the time I started working full time at the department store, but more importantly was able to start planning my wedding. My fiancée and I are getting married next summer at home in Wisconsin. With me being away at school for most of the year we knew that we had to get a lot of planning done while I was home over the summer; planning a wedding from across the county isn’t exactly the easiest task. However, finding time when Dan isn’t working isn’t exactly easy either.

He is a golf professional at a country club in Wisconsin and since we are only blessed with a couple months of warm weather a year, those few months are extremely busy on the golf course. He is always busy giving lessons, preparing for tournaments and events, and running the pro shop. Whenever I was able to pull him away from work we spent time together meeting with our photographer, picking out invitations, meeting with the florist and picking out flowers, tasting food at the reception hall, and all of the other fun events that come with planning a wedding. My mom and sister were so helpful in all of the planning as well and I am so lucky to have them! By the end of the summer we had all of the big things planned and are now just working out a lot of the details. I am so excited and can’t wait until next summer!

My summer came to an end early as I headed back down to Florida in the middle of July. I was sad to say goodbye to my family and friends, but was very excited for what lies ahead of me. I returned to school so soon because I was offered an internship in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (OSIL).

As the director of All Campus Events (ACE), I am extremely involved in campus programming at Rollins. During my internship I will be working on solidifying the nightly events for Freshman Orientation. Each year ACE hosts several events for the freshman, which allows them to get to know one another, have fun, and be welcomed into the Rollins Community. We spend a lot of time planning these events with Rollins Explorations to come up with the best events and activities for our first year students. In addition to finalizing the Orientation events I will be working on many other campus programming projects. One of my goals is to design a student programming resource manual to assist student organizations with planning events on campus.

I am really looking forward to my final year here at Rollins. I am confident that it is going to be the best year ever. I have so many plans for the organizations that I am involved in and I am excited for all of the events and activities that all of the other student groups on campus are going to be providing for the campus!!

More about Jenn...

As she begins her fifth and final year at Rollins, Jenn is clearly not a new student to the Rollins community. After studying abroad in Spain and having two very different concentrations, Spanish and Pre-dental, she is spending her last year finishing up her dental school prerequisites and completing her Spanish major. Staying at Rollins for another year has allowed her to continue being involved on campus as well.

Jenn is the director of All Campus Events (ACE), the president of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), and a member of the Academic Honor Council, NSCS, and Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society. She also enjoys teaching oral health care lessons to elementary students. “I think that my diverse involvement on campus and experiences will allow me to relate to many Rollins students and offer valuable insight to college life,” Jenn said.
