Classes heat up and the temp cools down
February 02, 2009
It seems that as classes begin to heat up, the temperature outside just continues to fall. The semester seemed to start out slowly as our first two weeks of class were shortened weeks followed by long weekends. (I’m not complaining) But man it was tough adjusting to a regular school week after that!
Now that we have had a couple full weeks of class, the intensity has picked up and we are in the full swing of things. My Analytical Chemistry class is busy crunching numbers as we are learning how to propagate error correctly when performing chemical analyses. We have also been busy in lab performing gravimetric determinations and preparing our own solutions for future experiments.
I thought I was going to hate having class at 8 a.m. three times a week during my last semester at Rollins, but having class with “EW” (Dr. Eng-Wilmot) is definitely worth it. After having him as my professor for General Chemistry a couple years ago, I was so excited to see that he was teaching Analytical Chemistry this semester. He is an amazing teacher and chemist and has so much to offer to his students. EW is always available and enthusiastic about helping students outside of the classroom whenever needed. I am really looking forward to spending my last semester with such a great professor!
My Sculpture class has been so much fun already this semester. Our first project is due this week: sculpting a life size replica of a shoe out of only masking tape. The project focuses on studying the design and structure of a three-dimensional object while also experimenting with creating sculptural forms out of “low art” materials.
Professor Almond let us choose any shoe that we wanted, but reminded us that we were to recreate the shoe as exactly as possible – including the inside, the sole, the laces, buckles, etc. While it is a fun and exciting project, it is also very challenging at times. Trying to take tape and shape it into a three-dimensional object is not exactly easy. The tape always bends the way you don’t want it to, crinkles when you want it to be smooth, and sticks to everything it’s not supposed to.
However, Professor Almond is the masking tape shoe king and is always there to give ideas, suggestions, and to help when disaster strikes! I’m working on the final touches and details of my shoe and I can’t wait to turn it in and receive the next project assignment!

Last week we had our first meeting for the Spanish Senior Capstone class that every Spanish major has to take their last semester before graduating. Talk about classes heating up – we have to decide by next week whether we want to write a 30-40 page thesis in Spanish or take an extensive written exam covering all of the readings that we have done over the course of our major at Rollins!
I have decided to take the route of writing a thesis and my topic is going to involve researching the access to dental care for the Spanish speaking population and creating a program/curriculum for educating Spanish speaking children on the importance of oral health care. I believe that educating the entire population on the importance of dental health care is an important step in decreasing the number of people who lack access to dental care. This is generally a very intimidating assignment; writing a thesis in another language, but I am extremely excited to tackle the challenge. I think this is an excellent way to finish at Rollins with a project that integrates both of my concentrations and passions into one final huge project!
Now for this crazy cold weather … in the almost five years that I have been down here, I can’t remember a time that it has been so cold for so many days. The past few weeks I have wished that I brought more winter clothes down here from home up north. A couple mornings last week I actually had to scrape ice off of my windshield before I could leave for school! This isn’t why I came down to the South – I want the Florida sunshine back!!
| More about Jenn... As she begins her fifth and final year at Rollins, Jenn is clearly not a new student to the Rollins community. After studying abroad in Spain and having two very different concentrations, Spanish and Pre-dental, she is spending her last year finishing up her dental school prerequisites and completing her Spanish major. Staying at Rollins for another year has allowed her to continue being involved on campus as well.
Jenn is the director of All Campus Events (ACE), the president of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), and a member of the Academic Honor Council, NSCS, and Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society. She also enjoys teaching oral health care lessons to elementary students. “I think that my diverse involvement on campus and experiences will allow me to relate to many Rollins students and offer valuable insight to college life,” Jenn said.
