Survey Shows Important Findings Regarding Nonprofit Executive Positions
The Rollins College Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership Center is releasing significant information found during a compensation and benefits survey of local nonprofits. The 2007 Central Florida Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits Survey is the first one of its kind for the nonprofit sector in Central Florida.
One hundred fifty-three eligible nonprofit organizations that employ 9,700 employees completed the survey. Data was complied on over 5,600 individual salaries, which were categorized into 100 job titles. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations rely on accurate data to set salaries and benefits for their employees
Other findings include:
- Sixty-three percent of all executive directors in the sample are women. A relatively greater number of men are found in the executive director positions of the largest organizations, which tend to pay higher wages.
- Women in executive levels earn 71 percent of what men earn in the same positions. It was thought women earned 78-82 percent of what men did nationally.
- There is a lack of diversity/ethnicity in executive positions where only 9 percent are African American and 6 percent are Hispanic, which does not reflect that nearly 21 percent of the population is Hispanic and 15 percent are African American.
- The nonprofit sector employs one out of every 18 workers in the U.S. labor force, and in Florida, the nonprofit sector is the sixth largest source of employment among all industry sectors. The survey is a comprehensive report of current salaries and benefits paid to nonprofit personnel in.
